Alloy

Alloy
The addition of a second metal, or combination of metals, to the main element to make it either harder or softer. Copper is the most commonly alloyed metal in silver. Coin silver has slightly more coper—up to ten percent—sterling has somewhat less—about five per cent. Sometimes another metal is added to change the color of the parent, as in colored gold.
