Blow Pipe

Blow Pipe
A bent metal tube about the size of a large, tapered drinking straw. In the earliest stages of silver soldering the smith blew air across burning charcoal to achieve enough heat to bring silver to nearly the melting point. It was an unpleasant and dangerous process and many smith went blind after years of this practice.
