Silver, gold and brass get hard and brittle when hammered, bent, and worked.Heating the piece red-hot and quenching it in acid softens the silver to its natural state, making it more malleable and easier to work. Typically during the construction of a piece of jewelry the silver has to be annealed several times. The opposite of temper, a technique used to harden steel.
